Female boxer Kara Ro Returns

Female boxer Kara Ro made her return to the ring earlier this month when she took on Liz Sherman (3-2-0) in Detroit, Michigan on October 6th.
This was Kara's first match in three years and Kara won via unanimous decision.
Kara's last fight was back in 2008 when she defeated Lakeysha Williams in Mount Pleasant, Michigan again by unanimous decision.
She retired afterwards due to a back injury.
Earlier this year, Kara was the victim of an armed robbery at her gym in Detroit but she hasn't lost a step since her last fight.
She said after the fight that she was looking forward to her next fight and wanted to pick back up with her boxing career at the age of 35.
Kara's record is now 17-0-0.

Besides her career in the ring, Kara is a a co-host on the morning show of Country 95.9 FM, a ring announcer in the Detroit area and is the trainer of seven-time Canadian champion and three-time world champion Mary Spencer.

Holly Holm Versus Anne Sophie Mathis

Holly "The Preachers Daughter" Holm will take on Anne Sophie Mathis at "World Dominance" in Albuquerque, New Mexico on December 2nd, 2011.

As you probably know, Holly made her female MMA debut at Fresquez Productions - Double Threat on March 4th, 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico with a win over Christina Domke (4-2-0).
She then switched gears and went back "home" to boxing, defeating Victoria Cisneros on June 10th, 2011 by unanimous decision.

Now Holly will face Anne Sophie Mathis.
Anne is 23-1-0 and that one loss was way back in her second pro fight in 1995.

Holly is 1-0-0 in MMA and 30-1-3 in boxing.
Her last loss was to Rita Turrisi on June 27th, 2004 to Rita Turrisi in Albuquerque.

At "World Dominance: Holm vs. Mathis", Holly will be trying to regain her IBA Welterweight title and WBAN Championship Belt.

Laila Ali Updates

Even though Laila Ali has not put on a pair of boxing gloves (professionally at least) since 2007 when she fought (and defeated) Gwendolyn O'Neil at the Emperor's Palace in Gauteng, South Africa, Laila is still the name most associated with female boxing.
Part of this is due to the fact that even though Laila hasn't stepped into a ring lately (she retired with a 24-0-0 record), she has still managed to stay in the limelight.
She's an author (Reach! Finding Strength, Spirit, and Personal Power in 2002), she was on the fourth season of Dancing with the Stars in 2007, in 2008 she hosted the revival of American Gladiators along with Hulk Hogan, and also in 2008, she was a correspondent on CBS' The Early Show and she hosted a reality show on The N called The N's Student Body.
And 2008 was very busy for Laila as she gave birth to her first child Curtis Muhammad Conway Jr. On September 29th, 2010.
She and her husband former NFL player Curtis Conway are now expecting their second child.
If all that isn't enough for you, Laila is involved in several charities including the Women's Sports Foundation, Feeding America, Care and Until There's A Cure.

Holly Holm - Boxing to MMA?

Holly Holm, one of the best female boxers out there today may be transitioning into another field...MMA.
Holly, whose boxing record is 29-1-3 is rumored to be making her MMA debut in 2011.
Of course her dating mixed martial arts fighter Joey Villasenor hasnt hurt that idea any.
And her current boxing coach, Mike Winkeljohn is co-owner of Jackson's/Winkeljohn's, one of the biggest MMA gyms in the world.

Holly actually started out in kickboxing so she has a martial arts background.
Now all she needs is some wrestling to balance her kicking and striking out.

What may be Holly's last boxing match was a win over Ann Saccurato on December 12th, 2010 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

I haven't done a "top anything" list on here in a while, so here are the top five female boxers so far this year on this blog.

1. Hollie Dunaway
Hollie Dunaway is without a doubt the most popular female boxer on this blog.
Even though earlier this month, Ana Maria Torres stopped Hollie in round six of Ana's title defense of her WBC female super flyweight championship.
Hollie's boxing record is now 23-9-1.

Holly's current record is 28-1-3.

Jessica also fights MMA, where she has a less than stellar 0-3-0.

Jenifer Alcorn Revisited

Another one of the most popular women on this blog is retired WIBA, IWBF, and IBA World Champion female professional boxer Jenifer Alcorn.
Jenifer retired undefeated with a 18-0-0 record and she was no shrinking violet.
In her last year boxing, she defeated Franchesca Alcanter, Mia St John and Jessica Rakoczy.

Her last fight was against Melissa Del Valle on December 11th, 2003 at the Palace Indian Gaming Center in Lemoore, California.

Jenifer may have retired from boxing in 2004, but she is still into fitness.
In 2007, she came in first place at the Flex Wheeler Classic Bodybuilding And Figure Contest.

Ina Menzer - Female Boxing

One of the most popular female boxers on this blog is German born Ina Menzer.
Ina was born on November 10th, 1980 in Atbasar, Kazakhstan, but she currently resides in Mönchengladbach, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
Her boxing record is an impressive 26-1-0, and that one loss was her last match against Canadian female boxer Jeannine Garside (10-3-1).
Before that Ina was on a twenty five in a row winning streak.

Female Boxing at the 2012 London Games

I was reading this morning that today marks the two year countdown for the 2012 London Games.
When they announced that women's boxing would be an Olympic sport in 2012, I wondered if we would see a surge in interest in the sport.
Well the best way I know to track surges is internet searches.

So I typed in "women's boxing" and this is what I got...

women's boxing gloves
women's boxing shoes
women's boxing weight classes
women's boxing apparel
women's boxing gear

You'll note all of these results are for boxing equipment.
You don't see any female boxers coming up in results.

So I tried "female boxing"...

female boxing movies
female boxing knockouts
female boxing training
female boxing ko
female boxing male

Not so much equipment here as info.
But still no names coming up.

Then I just tried the terms "female boxing" vs "women's boxing".....

Still no names, and quite frankly pretty disappointing returns on the amount they are being searched.

So is female boxing really not catching on yet?

Well it looks like training equipment is ranking well, which leads me to believe that there are women out there looking to train.
So maybe what we are seeing now is a surge in "doers" and not "watchers".
But as far as the popularity of a sport goes, "watchers" are more important.
It's the watchers that determine if a sport makes money.
Imagine if we had one million people training for football, but only one hundred people watching it.
Football wouldn’t last long.

The US needs some amazing, charismatic figure to qualify for women's boxing at the 2012 Olympics to boost interest here.
And the world needs the same to attract viewers when the competition starts.

Although on the other side of the coin, Women's judo was first awarded medals at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Do you know who took the gold for women's judo at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing?

Popularity is important, but it's not the only thing.

Ana Julaton Defeats Maria Elena Villalobos for the WBO Title

On Wednesday June 30, female boxer Ana Julaton defeated Maria Elena Villalobos from Mexico in the co-main at “Rumble at the Rama XII” in Ontario, Canada.
That win gave Ana the WBO Female Super bantamweight title and makes Ana's record 7-2-1.
Although Ana won, the fight was not without controversy.
Even though Ana won on two of the three judges scorecards, Villalobos appeared to be the more aggressive fighter throughout the match.
Maria pummeled Ana's ribs with lefts and rights, and at one point Ana went down, though the ref ruled it a slip, not a knockdown.
About halfway through the match, Ana’s left eye was swollen shut and had turned purple.
Ana won the match, but afterward at the post-fight interview the fans booed her loudly.

After this match, Ana holds both the International Boxing Association (IBA) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight championships.
By the way, Ana beat Maria in the same place that Lisa Brown defeated her for the World Boxing Association (WBA) female super bantamweight title back on March 27th, 2010.

Ana said in a post fight interview that she wants to hold a title fight in the Philippines for her Pinoy fans.

Female Boxing - Ina Menzer

WBC/WBO/WIBF female featherweight world champion Ina Menzer will be seeing action at “Universum Champions Night” at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart on July 3, 2010.
Ina will be facing a yet to be determined opponent.

Ina holds three featherweight world championship belts and has a record of 26 (with 10 KOs) -0 - 0.
Her latest win was a TKO over Ramona Kuehne on January 9th, 2010 in Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany.
Ina's trainer is Michael Timm, who had quite a successful amateur career himself.

She was born on November 10, 1980 in Atbasar, Kazakhstan and resides in Moenchengladbach, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

Female Boxing News: Ann Wolfe's Daughter Jennifer Fenn, Hagar Finer and More.....

Several pieces of women's boxing news today from all around the world, starting with the daughter of female boxer Ann Wolfe...

You may not know the name Jennifer Fenn, but if you follow womens's boxing, you probably have heard of her mother, Ann Wolfe.
At one time Ann held world titles in four different weight classes at the same time, and many regard her as one of the (if not the) hardest puncher in the history of female boxing.
Jennifer is following in her mother's footsteps, and she's off to a good start.
She's the no.1-ranked fighter at 141-pounds in the country.

Jennifer was supposed to make her pro boxing debut at the Austin Music Hall Friday night at her mother's "Best of Both Worlds" Boxing and MMA card against Jasmine Patton, but so far I haven’t been able to find any results.

Next, WIBF bantamweight champion Hagar Finer (21-7-3) retained her title in a boxing match at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv.
She defeated Armenian challenger Agnese Boza (who is 5-4-0 and stepped in for American Stephanie Dobbs) with a fifth round knockout.

Next up, at the Sungkyunkwan University in Suwon, South Korea, Friday, on April 30, 2010, South Korean World Boxing Association female featherweight champion, Choi Hyun-mi (4-0-1) defeated Claudia Andrea Lopez (14-5-0) of Argentina in a 2-1 split decision after 10-rounds.
This was Choi Hyun-mi's third successful title defense since beating Xu Chun Yan of China in 2008, to become the youngest champion in female boxing history.

And finally, even though Choi Hyun-mi has defended her title three times, she has a ways to go to catch up with International Female Boxers Association (IFBA) Strawweight Champion Park Ji-hyun (10-2-0).
On May 1st, she beat Satoko Kamimura (6-12-0) of Japan in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, making that her sixth successful title defense.
Park won the belt back in May 2000 by defeating Gong Jin (2-2-0) of China.

Interestingly enough, at the moment, Korean boxers hold most of the IFBA championships in the lighter classes.

Zulina Munoz

This is female boxer Zulina "La Loba" Munoz.
She was born Zulina Guadalupe Muñoz Grajeda on August 10th, 1987 in San Vicente Chicoloapan, México, Mexico.
Her current fight record is 22 wins (with 17 knockouts), 1 loss and 1 draw.
Zulina's loss was to Alesia "The Tigress" Graf, at Stadthalle, Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, on September 15th, 2007.
Her draw was with Galina Koleva Ivanova at Grand Hotel, Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico on September 6th, 2008.
Boxrec.com has Zulina rated 9th out of 77 bantamweight boxers in the world and rated as the number one female bantamweight boxer in Mexico.
Her last fight was a win over Yazmin Rivas on March 27th, 2010 in Deportivo Trabajadores del Metro, Iztacalco, Distrito Federal, Mexico.

Lisa "Bad News" Brown Defeats Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton

Lisa "Bad News" Brown put an end to Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton’s roll last night.
According to reports, Lisa pretty much just out powered Ana, but let's not forget that Brown is vastly more experienced.
Brown controlled almost the entire match, opening cuts over both of Ana's eyes.
So now Lisa (17-4-3) owns the World Boxing Association Female Super Bantamweight belt, a belt Ana (6-2-1) was hoping to add to her collection (she currently holds the the IBA and WBO Super Bantamweight titles) .
The judges scored the fight 99-91, 99-92 and 100-90.
That should give you some idea of how the fight went.

Female Boxing - Holly Holm Defeats Chevelle Hallback

In Albuquerque, New Mexico at the Isleta Casino and Resort, lightning did strike again as Holly Holm (26-1-3, 7 KOs) defeated Chevelle Hallback (27-6-2, 11 KOs) in a ten-round unanimous decision.
This was the second time the two had faced each other, the first time being back on May 23rd, 2007 at the Tingley Coliseum (also in Albuquerque, Holm's hometown) when Holm defeated her in another ten-round unanimous decision.

But the Holm - Hallback match wasn't the only female boxing bout on the card.
In the co-main event, female boxer Victoria Cisneros (4-8-2) got a majority decision victory over Terri Blair (11-15-3, 6 KOs).

Interestingly, Holly has victories over both Victoria and Terri.
She defeated Victoria on December 4th, 2009 at the Isleta Casino & Resort, and she defeated Terri on August 28th 2009 at the New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas.

This is Holly's fifth win in a row since her draw with Mary Jo Sanders (25-1-1) at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Michigan back on October 17th, 2008.

Female Boxing Updates - Lisa Brown, Maureen Shea, Ana Julaton and More...

Female boxing updates and latest boxing news...

Ana (The Hurricane) Julaton is back in the news.
Though I don't think she actually ever left.
At Rumble at Rama XI, on Saturday, March 27 at Casino Rama, Ana will be taking on Toronto's Lisa (Bad News) Brown.
Ana is 6-1-1, with 1 KO and Lisa is 16-4-3, with 5 KO's.
They will be facing each other for the vacant WBA Super Bantamweight world title.
So far (as I have pointed out here before) Ana has beaten Kelsey Jeffries for the vacant IBA female Junior Bantamweight title and Donna Biggers to claim the WBO 122-pound world crown.
Despite a ten year gap between the two fighters (Ana is 29 and Lisa is 39) everyone is expecting a close bout.
This is Ana's way of really making her way into the big time, and also her chance to hold three titles at the same time.

And the day before that, March 26th in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the Isleta Casino and Resort, Chevelle Hallback will be taking on Holly Holm for the WIBA's 140 pound world title.
Holly Holm was born on October 17th, 1981 and was born in Albuquerque, so she'll be fighting in her own home town.
Her record stands at 26 (7 KO's) - 1 - 3.
Chevelle Hallback was born September 3rd, 1971 in Plant City Florida, and has a boxing record of 27 (11 KO's) - 5 - 2.
She faced Holly once before on May 23rd, 2007 at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque and lost, so this is Chevelle's chance for payback.

And in a follow up on the last post, Maureen “The Real Million Dollar Baby” Shea (13-2-0) didnt get to face Nydia “Da Phnominal” Feliciano (2-0-1) at the “St. Patty’s Day Brawl”.
Shea had to pull out due to an injury, and was replaced with national kickboxing champion Jennifer Han.
Though Jennnifer came in with a (0-1) record, she hung with Nydia through all six rounds, ending the match in a draw.

First, there's an article at Google news by Nam You-Sun about female boxer Choi Hyun-Mi who defected from North Korea and is now the WBA women's featherweight champion.

North Korea defector fights her way to the top

"Teenager Choi Hyun-Mi, struggling to make a new life in South Korea after fleeing North Korea with her parents, literally fought her way to the top.
Choi, who switched from amateur to professional boxing to support her family, is now the World Boxing Association (WBA) women's featherweight champion -- still deeply in love with the sport she took up in Pyongyang at age 13.
"I think I was born to box," said Choi, now 19, recalling how she switched from track after a school boxing coach in the North Korean capital persuaded her to visit the gym."

Natalia Ragozina

Female Russian boxer Natalia Ragozina has gotten a heavyweight belt after her first fight in her home land.
"The Russian Tsarina" already had seven super-middleweight titles before her boxing match with Pamela "Grenade" London.
She put Pamela on the canvas in the eigth round, and picked up the vacant Women's International Boxing Federation (WIBF) heavyweight title, all the while raising her boxing record to 22-0-0, with 13 of her wins being knockouts.
Natalia is a single mother with a nine-year old son and she is very popular in Europe for her in-ring boxing skills, and for her reveiling pictorials published in magazines.
She was recently named "Miss Sport Russia" in the annual beauty contest.

And Natalia has a goal.
She wants to fight Laila Ali.
But she seems to be having trouble arranging that match.
I guess that puts Natalia in the same club as Ann Wolfe, Vonda Ward, Lucia Rijker and Leatitia Robinson.

Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton

On December 4th , at San Jose's Shark Tank at the HP Pavilion, Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton took on Donna "Nature Girl" Biggers.
Ana won, and in doing so claimed the WBO Super Bantamweight title, her second world title.
Back in July of this year, she defeated Kelsey Jeffries at HP Pavilion in her seventh pro fight to get the IBA Super Bantamweight title.
The beautiful Filipino-American had once said she planned to retire at 30, but at 29 now, she shows no signs of slacking off.
To the contrary, she seems to be picking up speed.
Her record stands now at 6-1-1, with 1 knockout.
Can see go on and defeat the WBC and WBA title holder Marcela Acuña of Argentina?
And what about WIBF title holder Esther Shouten of The Netherlands?

Boxing Day fight in memory of Jizelle Salandy
Despite the continued complaint about lack of funds, Trinidad and Tobago’s top female fighter Ria Ramnarine will depart Saturday for the United States for a three-week training camp in preparation for her Boxing Day re-match against Venezuela’s Ana Fernandez, scheduled for Saith Park in Chaguanas.
So said Ramnarine’s promoter Boxu Potts yesterday at a media conference at Sweet Lime Restaurant in Woodbrook, also adding that the card on December 26, which is to become an annual affair, will be staged in memory of deceased world title-holder Jizelle Salandy, who died in a vehicular accident last January.

I said that when the word came out that female boxing would be included in the London Olympics in 2012, we'd start seeing more and more media coverage of the sport, and it looks like I was right.
Doing this blog was a pain a lot of times because I just couldn't get any new info on women's boxing, but now my cup runneth over.
Case in point.....

An article at the Independent ie about a young lady I've written about a few times here, Katie Taylor from Ireland.
I'm expecting to see Katie do some great things at the Olympics in 2012.

It's been since January since I did a top ten list of the most popular female boxers.
No bear in mind, this isn't a list of the best female boxers, it's a list of who was the most searched for on this blog.
And since I did the last list at the beginning of the year, one thing has remained constant.....

1. Laila Ali
Yes, the daughter of "The Greatest" is still the most searched for female boxer on the site.
Dancing with the Stars, American Gladiators and The Early Show seem to be her latest claims to fame, not boxing, but that didn't stop her from outdistancing all the other ladies.
Laila's last fight was on February 3rd 2007 against Gwendolyn O'Neil which Laila won.

2. Lisa Brown
16-3-3 Lisa Brown came in number two.
Her last fight was a TKO win over Maribel Santana in March

3.Mia St John
In women's boxing, Mia St John is almost as inescapable as Gina Carano is in female MMA.
Mia (45-10-2) is always in the top ten.
Her last fight was a loss to Brooke Dierdorff on April 4, 2009.

4. Regina Halmich
Regina has an incredible (to me at least) record of 54-1-1.
Her last fight was a win over Hagar Shmoulefeld Finer back in 2007.

5. Christy Martin
I just got finished doing a couple of entries about Christy and her win over Dakota Stone.
Christy is 49-5-3 and looking for 50 before she retires.

6. Lucia Rijker
The "The Dutch Destroyer" seems to provoke both positive and negative emotions in female fight fans.
You either love her or hate her.
Lucia's last fight was a win over Deborah Fettkether back in 2004.
Her record is 17-0-0 and she wants one more fight....
The number one lady on this list, Laila Ali.

7. Ann Wolfe
The lady that held world titles in four different weight classes simultaneously has a record of 24-1-0.

Currently a hot commodity in female MMA, Erin is one of the ladies being looked at to face Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos.

Christy Martin - The New WBC Female Junior Middleweight Champion

Christy Martin raised her pro boxing record to 49-5-3 with a win over Dakota Stone at the New York State Fair.
Besides winning the match, Christy took home the WBC female junior middleweight championship.
Christy broke her right hand at the beginning of the tenth round, but hung in there and came out on top.
The 41-year-old female boxing legend is aiming for 50 wins, but that might be slowed down a tad because of her injury.
But only one more and she has it.
"The Coal Miner's Daughter" has faced some of the greats during her boxing career like Holly Holm, Laila Ali and Mia St John.

I hope this broken hand is just a temporary set back, and Christy drives on to that 50th win.

Female Boxing - Christy Martin versus Dakota Stone Tonight

Christy Martin was born in Bluefield, West Virginia on June 12th, 1968, and she had her first pro boxing match at the age of 21.
(This was after she won a few Tough Man/Tough Woman contests in college)

Christy is still boxing and has a 48-5-3 record with 31 wins by knockout.
And tonight, 20 years after her pro boxing debut, Christy will try to raise that record to 49 in a bout with Dakota Stone (9-7-5) for the vacant WBC female junior middleweight championship.

Yes, the "Coal Miner's Daughter" (she really is the daughter of a West Virginia coal miner) is still going strong in female boxing, even if the sport is being over-shadowed by female MMA right now.
(Of course all that can change now with the International Olympic Committee adding women's boxing to the 2012 Olympics).

The fight will take place at the Mohegan Sun Grandstand in Syracuse, New York tonight.
The event is part of the 75th annual "Women's Day" at New York State Fair.

Fight Night (Rigged) (2008)

I did an entry on this movie on my Female MMA blog, but because the line is kinda blurry here, I think it fits into the female boxing category as well.
“Fight Night” follows Katherine “Kat” Parker (played by Rebecca Neuenswander) as she is recruited by a shady, fast-talking manager, Dublin (Chad Ortis), who has spent years learning the ropes in the illegal boxing world.
When Dublin realizes he has a legitimate winner in Kat, they figure to get rich by taking on and whipping up all the male contenders within this seedy underground circuit of basement bars and abandoned warehouses.
But Dublin’s dubious past is never too far behind.

Unlike most of these female boxing movies (with the exception of Million Dollar Baby) this movie got a lot of good reviews.
It won the Grand Jury Prize (best film in festival) at Dances with Films (Los Angeles, CA), It won Best Feature Film at the RADAR Film Festival (Hamburg, Germany), It won Best Cinematography and was nominated for Best Feature, Best Action Sequence on Film at the Action on Film International Film Festival (California, USA), Rebecca Neuenswander won Best Female Performance and the film was nominated for Best Direction at the SoCal Film Festival (California, USA), it was nominated for Best Editing, Best Cinematography at the Young Cuts Film Festival and it was selected as the Closing Night Film at the Kansas International Film Festival.

"In da Red Corner" is a 2006 female boxing movie made in the Philippines.
The Filipino title is "Ngipin ni Doring"
It's about a young woman (Doring) who gets into boxing, hoping to be discovered, go to the big time and elevate her family out of the poverty they are living in.
Meryll Soriano plays Doring

Really that's about all I can find on this movie.
Not even a poster or a DVD case picture.
I couldn't even find any clips on YouTube.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)

And now we come to what is probably the biggest female boxing movie ever, 2004's Million Dollar Baby.
The film was directed, co-produced and scored by Clint Eastwood and starred Eastwood, Hilary Swank, and Morgan Freeman.
I really thought the movie would give female boxing more of a boost than it did.
Especially with it being nominated for seven Academy Awards and winning four.
And it was nominated for and won a ton of other awards as well.
Plus the film made over $216 million dollars in box office sales.
The movie itself was based on short stories by F.X. Toole, the pen name of fight manager and "cutman" Jerry Boyd and released under the name "Rope Burns".

The movie also starred Lucia Rijker (professional female boxer, kickboxer, and actress) as Billie 'The Blue Bear'

Honeybee is a 2001 female boxing film about a young lady (Brianna 'Honeybee' Dukes played by Senait Ashenafi) who drops out of college to pursue a career as a professional boxer.
Generally regarded as not as good as "Girlfight".

Senait Ashenafi, who plays the lead, was on General Hospital from 1994 to 1998 as Keesha Ward.
In in a weird bit of synchronicity, her father in the movie is played by James Avery who played Philip Banks on "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air".
Senait actually guest starred on an episode of The Fresh Prince as a "Sexy Coed".

The movie also had female boxers Corinne Van Ryck de Groot and Marie Davis.

Ana Julaton versus Melissa Hernandez

Filipina boxing star Ana “the Hurricane” Julaton will be stepping into the ring on August 1st with another female boxer that used to use that nickname Melissa Hernandez.
Ana will be challenging Melissa for her WIBA junior lightweight title at Agua Caliente Casino.

Ana is 4-1-1, with her latest match being a loss to Dominga Olivo on August 21st, 2008 at Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, California.
Melissa is 11-1-2, and her latest match was a win over Ambar Fajardo in the Centro de Convenciones Atlapa, Panama City, Panama on July 21st, 2009.

I'm gonna have to go with Melissa Hernandez on this one.

The next female boxing movie also came out in 2000, Girlfight.
This movie got some buzz when it came out, and the star is one of my favorite actresses, Michelle Rodriguez.
Yeah, I know, Michelle looks like she's ready to stomp someone all the time, so I guess this role was a perfect fit.

Anyway, Michelle plays Diana Guzman, a tough high school girl with a violent streak.
I know, really a stretch huh?
Diana has trouble at home, problems at school and a sad social life.
But Diana finds solace and refuge in the boxing ring at a Brooklyn gym.
Against her fathers wishes she begins to train there and eventually wins the gym's championship for female boxers.

By the way, Michelle was chosen out of over 300 women for this role, and she trained for over two months before shooting began.

Girlfight won the Director's Award the Grand Jury Prize at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, the Award of the Youth at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, and Michelle got tons of awards and nominations for the film including the National Board of Review, Deauville Film Festival, Independent Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards and the Las Vegas Film Critics Sierra Awards.

It was written and directed by Karyn Kusama (Æon Flux).

Except for Clint Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby" you don't hear much about female boxing movies.
No, I'm not counting Foxy Boxy videos.
So I thought I would do a little digging and see what I could find.
The first movie I ran across could be the oldest women's boxing movie......

Blonde Fist (1991)

A Liverpool woman, Ronnie O'Dowd (the daughter of a bare knuckle fighter) is put in jail for assault.
She escapes and crosses the big pond to go to New York to find her estranged father, now an alcoholic dishwasher.
To get the money to fly back to England, she becomes a female boxer.

The movies stars Margi Clarke as Ronnie O'Dowd, Ken Hutchinson as John O'Dowd and Carroll Baker as Lovelle Summers.
It also stars real life boxer Susan Atkins as Crazy Sue.

I wonder what happened to Frida Wallberg?
She was one of Sweden's all-time most successful female boxers, she left to have a baby, but I haven't heard anything of her coming back.
Frida had a great amateur record of 48-5.
Her pro record was 6-0.
She was also National Swedish Champion (1998-2003), the Nordic Champion (2001) the European Champion (2000) and the World Champion (2001).
You may even recall the boxing match where Zarrika Fatuma went all Mike Tyson on her and bit her collarbone during the fight, not once but twice!

Ina Menzer Defeats Francesca Alcanter

Ina, who is the WBC female and WIBF women’s International Boxing Federation featherweight champion, defeated Francesca with a 10-round unanimous decision.
Ina Menzer (24-0, 9 KOs) controlled the fight against Francesca (18-9-1, 9 KOs).
The fight was by all reports...well...boring.
Both fighters appeared cautious of each other.

Mia St. John will be defending her WBC International Lightweight Female title against Brook Deardoof on April 4, 2009 in Ciudad Victoria, City of the Mexican State of Tamaulipas.
Mia won the title on December 20, 2008 in Cozumel, Mexico, defeating Darys Pardo by unanimous decision.

Besides boxing, Mia won her first MMA fight on January 26, 2008 in Honolulu, Hawaii, defeating Rhonda Gallegos with a first-round knockout.

And Mia will be attending the Steel City Con 2009 on April 24, 25, and 26.

With the 2012 London Olympics coming up, there seems to be more and more coverage of female boxing.
Of course women's boxing isn't a "lock" for the Olympics, but it seems to be pretty darn close and female boxers in the US and all over the world are gearing up.

I wonder with the 2012 Olympics closing in, if we will see more and more female boxing matches get promoted this way.
In the past you had to be a well known name like Laila Ali to get a lot of coverage, but now it seems the media wants to give even the smaller bouts more press.
Of course the local news outlets have always given their local fighters coverage, but now the national outlets seem to be getting into it.

And speaking of Laila, Sharon “Wild Thing” Anyos (14-3), the pioneer of female boxing in Australia is trying to set up a match for later this year between herself and the daughter of "The Greatest".
Ali is of course 24-0.
Sharon wants to set up the fight to benefit victims of the bush fires in Australia.

Sarah Blewden Won't Be Going To The 2012 Olympic Games

Well it had to happen.
One amateur female boxer that will not be competing in the 2012 Olympic Games is model turned boxer Sarah Blewden.
She has become the first Brit to be banned from competing as an amateur boxer because of her breast implants.
Sarah runs a beauty salon and took up boxing to stay fit.
The lady, it turns out, had good ring skills.
But now the Amateur Boxing Association won't let her compete citing health risks. The ABA says that repeated blows to the chest could result in "'capsular contracture" or distortion.
I must say that I have to agree with them. Knowingly placing a boxers health at risk is not good for the sport.
But my question is, if she wants to compete, can she not have them removed and re-apply?

Female Boxing Another Step Closer to the 2012 Olympics

The International Amateur Boxing Association voted unanimously Wednesday to go ahead with a bid to include female boxing in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
AIBA president Ching-Kuo Wu said that an official application would be submitted to the International Olympic Committee at the end of February.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will vote on the proposal in Copenhagen in October.

So now can we expect even more coverage of female boxing here in the US and across the world?
Well we already are, so I think this will boost interest even more.

And to echo that, here is a story from boston.com by Milton J. Valencia, about New England female boxers getting into the sport.
"These hands are no different from any Jack O'Neill has wrapped in his decades in boxing. Good jab, strong one-two. He would like to see a little more head movement, but so far he likes the progress. Matie Desjardins, the woman who walked into his gym a year ago with barely any skills, has earned his respect."

Over at Fight Ticker.com, Brian Furby has an interview with female boxer and now MMA fighter Chevelle Hallback.
"Chevelle "Fists of Steel" Hallback is one of the most decorated female boxers of all time. Recently, she made news when she switched to MMA. Chevelle's first pro MMA fight ended with her winning via TKO just 41 seconds into the first round. She looks to repeat that performance on the first pro regulated MMA card that the state of Tennessee will see -- XFC 7: School of Hard Knox, on February 20th."

" Mayra Zavala doesn't fight to become an Olympic boxer.
She doesn't fight to qualify to the national Golden Gloves tournament, either. There isn't one for women.
"My ultimate goal is to turn pro one day," said Zavala, one of 51 females competing in the Dallas Golden Gloves, which starts tonight at Hella Shrine Temple at 2121 Rowlett Road in Garland. "

My last entry was about women taking up boxing as a fitness program.
And I wondered then if because of the seeming surge in interest, if fitness boxing would start picking up speed.
Well it appears that may be correct.
Here's another story about another gym that's promoting female boxing as not so much a sport, but a way to stay in shape.

Of course the title says "Few in women's classes plan to compete in the ring", but if you follow boxing, you know how that goes.
I'm betting someone will get involved in boxing for fitness, really like it and maybe become the next big pro.
It's possible that some lady that laces up the gloves in a little gym just to lose weight and get into shape, could be the next Laila Ali.
Stories like that have been around in boxing for years.

You know I keep talking about how female boxing is getting more and more popular.
And I know some of it has to do with the hope of it being included in the 2012 Olympics.
But it seems lots of women are embracing boxing as a general fitness workout.
Okay I know that has been going on for years, but will we see an increase in "Boxing for Fitness" as well as for sport?

Two female boxing stories today.
One that honors a current boxer, and one that honors one that has fallen.
And while all of this is going on, fans around the world are looking to October, waiting to see if the International Olympic Committee will approve female boxing in the 2012 Olympic London Games.

You may remember that a little while back, Ireland's Katie Taylor won the International Boxing Association (AIBA) female boxer of the year.
Now she has has been given another honor, the Irish Times/Irish Sports Council sportswoman of the year for 2008.

Female boxing continues to pick up speed and media coverage.
I heard a quote from an unlikely source the other day that made me think.
It was on a Batman Cartoon where Batman was teamed up with Wildcat. If you don't know anything about comics, Wildcat is a superhero that at one time was a heavyweight boxer.
Anyway, Wildcat was talking to some kids that had gotten into trouble and he said," Look kids, I had a bad life too, but one day I found the ring. I laced up the gloves and never looked back."
I think that's part of the appeal of Boxing.
I've profiled lawyers on here, and people that have come up from the depths of poverty.
Once they lace up the gloves, they never look back.

I had done a profile of her back in August of last year.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad — Trinidadian boxing champion Giselle Salandy died Sunday from injuries sustained in a car crash on the outskirts of the Caribbean country's capital. She was 21.
Salandy died at Port-of-Spain General Hospital on Sunday morning shortly after the dawn crash, according to Information Minister Neil Parsanlal. He said Salandy's car ran off a highway and smashed into a concrete column after she had brought a friend to Piarco International Airport.
Salandy, known for her quick feet and fast jabs, was the title holder for several international female boxing groups, including the Women's International Boxing Association and the World Boxing Council.

Part of the appeal of Boxing (be it men or women) is that so many boxers have a colorful history.
Stories of overcoming hardships that would make most people just give up.
Thailand's women's boxing champion Samson Sor Siriporn is no different.

Boxing rift must be settled for good of Thailand
To err is human, but to forgive is divine - that's the wonderful saying I was reminded of when I heard of the boxing conflict that has broken out between the two characters who made history for the kingdom.
The unpleasantness which has broken out between Thailand's first women's world boxing champion Samson Sor Siriporn and her former manager Chuwong Toomkit has undoubtedly created unpleasantness.
Samson created history by being the first female prison inmate to earn a world boxing title, the WBC women's light-flyweight crown. And, thanks to her exemplary behaviour which projected the programme launched by Corrections Department chief Nathee Chitsawang, her life has changed dramatically.

Chevelle Hallback, Boxing and MMA

As I mentioned over at my Female MMA blog, female boxer Chevelle Hallback will be making her MMA debut on December 5th at the Xtreme Fighting Championships event in Florida.
How will this work out?
Well Chevelle already has the striking part down as a boxer with a 22-2-2 (with one no-contest) record since 2002. That includes 11 knockout wins.
Her nickname is "Fists of Steel" so yes she can hit.
And Chevelle is working on her ground game by studying jiu-jitsu and wrestling.
If she can mount a good ground game, she will indeed be a force to reckon with.
But why leave boxing?
It's not really leaving boxing. Chevelle wants to (understandably) go down in history a the greatest female fighter ever. That includes MMA and Boxing.
Let's just hope after this she doesn't set her sights on the WWE.....

Then again why not? Brock Lesnar is the UFC champion, Kurt Angle keeps talking about getting into MMA. Mia St.John tried her hand at MMA.The line between Boxing, MMA and Wrestling seems to be blurring.
If Chevelle wants to try to dominate all forms of combat, I say let her go for it!
And I wish her luck.

Female Boxing in the UK is Taking Off

I keep talking about how female boxing seems to be growing and growing.
Of course I take into consideration the possible addition of women's boxing in the 2012 London Olympics as a major factor.
And the UK seems to be really getting behind this.

Boxing girls prove it’s not just for boys
An amateur boxing club in Eastburn is the first in the area to have two teenage girls ‘carded up’ for competition.
Naz Jalil, who works at Keighley-based labels company Nilorn UK, heads up Eastburn Boxing Club and has ensured that the girls - Jess Wilson, 16 from Silsden and Ambreen Sadiq, 14 from Keighley - have completed the necessary medicals or ‘cards’ and are now registered with the Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE) to allow them to compete outside of the club. Naz said: “Boxing is predominately a male dominated sport so to find two really good female boxers is highly unusual. Jessica has just competed at a championship show in Hartlepool and both girls will be fighting it out at Eastburn Boxing Club show at Valley Parade in Bradford tomorrow (Friday).

THOUGH BOXING is not known to be widely practised among females in Barbados, the Belfield Amateur Boxing Gym is looking for young women who are eager to learn the pugilistic art.
Gym director and trainer at the Black Rock, St Michael centre, Kelvin Nowell, told WEEKEND SPORT his aim was to train women with the view of them representing Barbados at both the Caribbean Boxing Championships slated for next year and the World Amateur Women's Boxing Championships in 2010.
"Already, we have a few keen and promising young ladies in training but we are looking for quite a few more. We are looking to train girls from age ten and up," he said.
When WEEKEND SPORT visited the Belfield Gym on Tuesday, Nowell, along with boxing promoter Sam Layne and boxer Christopher 'Shaka' Henry, was busy taking some promising fighters through their paces.
While Nowell and Layne were paying close attention to the sisters Shakenya and Shanique Hinkson, Henry was busy in another corner training the young and very talented Rico Medford from the Barbados Youth Service for the up-coming schoolboys' championship next month.
Shakenya is a second-form student of the St Lucy Secondary School while her younger sister is a third-former at Grazettes Primary.
Both sisters said they had always loved to watch boxing and wanted to get involved.

KNOCKOUT Natalie McKay will make boxing history tomorrow when she becomes the first Scottish female to compete in the World Amateur Championships.
The 15-year-old, a member of the Port Glasgow Victoria Club in Renfrewshire jets out to Gothenburg in Sweden with five male fighters to make her competitive debut.
She said: "I am a bit nervous, but even more excited. I am in the 54kgs category as a novice. There is not much competition in Scotland because of my age and as there aren't a lot of female boxers."

Guwahati, Oct.14 (ANI): The recently held 4th Asian womens boxing championship witnessed a big cheer in the northeast, as of the three gold medals won by India , two were won by the women boxers belonging to this part of the country.
There were 79 women boxers from 11 Asian countries participating in the championship held at Guwahatis Sarusajai Sports Complex.
For Sarita Devi, one of the medalists, from Manipur it was a repeat of her performance of the World Boxing Championship held in the national capital Delhi a few years ago.
Twenty-six-year-old Sunita, who is a Manipur Police inspector with two Asian titles in the 54 kg weight group and one gold medal at the World championship in the 52 kg category, earned her third Asian gold with triumph.
The performance of northeast was good. Out of the five contestants, three have won while two other lost. Win or loss is a part of game, so one shouldn”t get too much disappointed of that. But definitely, the future of northeast women boxer is good,” said Sarita Devi.

This year, for the first time in the history of women’s boxing, professional women boxers have been awarded independent world title belts. The belts were previously only awarded to male boxers by Ring Magazine.
On June 13, 2008, at the Isleta Casino & Resort, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on the televised Pay-Per-View event, “FINALLY”, the Women's Boxing Archive Network gave out two history-making belts.

Allen’s coach Rufus Edwards charged yesterday that Alleyne was being victimised because she had criticised the Amateur Boxing Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ABATT) in the past.
Allen joined the national team two weeks before the start of the championship after refusing to attend a live-in camp that was being held by the amateur association and supervised by national coach, Cuban Vincente Martinez at the Cosmic Boxing Gym in Marabella.

Women's boxing should be added to the 2012 London Games, the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) executive committee formally proclaimed Monday, announcing plans to develop a detailed proposal to put before the International Olympic Committee later this year.

BARBADOS is being positioned to host the World Women's Boxing Championships in 2010.

Joyce Bowen, chairperson of the women's commission of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA), said it would be one of the topics up for discussion when the island hosts the International Women's Boxing conference this weekend.

Bowen met recently with Minister of Sports Esther Byer-Suckoo and has received the green light from the Democratic Labour Party Government in support of the venture.

Former Minister of Sports Anthony Wood had given the assurance last year during the visit of AIBA president Dr C. K. Wu of Taiwan.

Canadian women's boxing champ Amber Konikow eyes her Thursday-night opponent from across the gym.

India's Kaujta Goyat is shorter than the lanky Sudbury native, but the world champ sports some pipes that hint to her power.

"What can you do?" Konikow said of the impending match at the Caruso. "She's a world champ, but I'm not going to stress out about it. A boxing match is a boxing match, and she's a girl, just like I am.

"She has excellent skills, so I'm just going to throw it all into the ring."

April 14, 2008 10:11 AM - It was a good thing boxer Olga Heron didn’t have to make weight before entering the ring Saturday, because the former featherweight would’ve tipped the scales far above the 126 lb. limit.

That’s because she’s weighing in for two these days.

Heron, 28, who’s one month away from giving birth, was overseeing an amateur boxing card held at Mississauga’s HUF gym, which she runs along with husband and trainer Andrew.

Although she wouldn’t be doing any fighting herself, two local boxers on the card say they have been inspired by Heron’s six year, pro career which has included competing on national television and in front of thousands at the Hershey Centre.

Women's boxing champ gets Star Trek role

Dutch boxing champion Lucia Rijker has landed a part in the new Star Trek film starring Winona Ryder.

Apart from revealing that she will look ‘unusual’ in the film, details are being kept under wraps. The film will premiere in Holland at the beginning of 2009.

Rijker, known as 'the most dangerous woman in the world', also had a role in the boxing movie Million Dollar Baby.
