Female Boxing Updates - November 24th, 2009

Female boxing continues to roll along with upcoming boxing matches and mainstream news articles, even though a lot of the fight news seems to be coming from outside of the US....

Ria Ramnarine - female boxing
Ria Ramnarine

Boxing Day fight in memory of Jizelle Salandy
Despite the continued complaint about lack of funds, Trinidad and Tobago’s top female fighter Ria Ramnarine will depart Saturday for the United States for a three-week training camp in preparation for her Boxing Day re-match against Venezuela’s Ana Fernandez, scheduled for Saith Park in Chaguanas.
So said Ramnarine’s promoter Boxu Potts yesterday at a media conference at Sweet Lime Restaurant in Woodbrook, also adding that the card on December 26, which is to become an annual affair, will be staged in memory of deceased world title-holder Jizelle Salandy, who died in a vehicular accident last January.

Ria is currently 12-5-0 and Ana is 10-5-0.

And here we have a story from the UK....

Female Boxing Hopes For Slice of Funding
Women in Southwark could be hot on the heels of World Champ David Haye, with hopes that a women’s boxing club could land a slice of a new £10 million sports fund.
Rebecca Donnelly, who runs mixed boxing sessions at the Lilian Baylis Old School Site in Kennington, was at the launch of the new Sport England Active Women's Fund that also took place at the site on November 11.

And from the Republic of Zambia we have this...

Esther wants anti doping tests
Zambian female boxer Esther Phiri this morning took her coach and promoters by surprise when she spoke out about her frustrations of fighting in a country without strict anti-doping rules.
Esther will this Saturday take on Kentucky raised American pugilist Terry Blair at Mulungushi International Conference Center in Lusaka for the Women International Boxing Association (WIBA).

I'm gonna have to go with Esther here.

And here is some news about an upcoming reality show that will feature male and female amateur boxers...

Allston companies partner with NESN for boxing show
Three Allston-based companies - Metropolitan Pictures, Stingray Body Art and Boston Boxing & Fitness, have announced a broadcast partnership with New England Sports Network (NESN) to air a new seven-episode reality-TV show entitled, “Boston Boxing: Team Training.”
The series will air on Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m., starting on Dec. 23.
The half-hour show that combines an educational “learn about boxing” approach with the escalating competition of a good reality show, follows two mixed male and female teams of amateur boxers as they learn, train and eventually fight in a one-hour “Fight Night Finale” exhibition match final episode.

And an article at Guardian.co.uk about how boxing is gaining popularity in High Schools, mentions that the girls are starting to get into it...

Women's boxing, which will be included in the London Olympics for the first time in 2012, is one of the sport's biggest growth areas.
According to Sport England's Active People survey, 37,000 women are now regular participants. The number of registered female boxers in the UK has risen from 50 in 2005 to more than 642 this year. Rebecca Gibson, head of development at the Amateur Boxing Association of England, said in the past year the biggest increase in registered boxers had been among girls aged between 11 and 17.

Female Boxing Updates - November 2nd, 2009

I said that when the word came out that female boxing would be included in the London Olympics in 2012, we'd start seeing more and more media coverage of the sport, and it looks like I was right.
Doing this blog was a pain a lot of times because I just couldn't get any new info on women's boxing, but now my cup runneth over.
Case in point.....

An article at the Independent ie about a young lady I've written about a few times here, Katie Taylor from Ireland.
I'm expecting to see Katie do some great things at the Olympics in 2012.

"The Bulgarian keeps her guard up, her elbows tucked in near her abdomen, her gloves resting on her face guard. She ducks once, twice, and absorbs a left jab, then a right hook, then a flurry of punches.
Thirty seconds into the semi-finals of the European Amateur Women's Boxing Championships and Katie Taylor is already 2-0 up."

And here is an article about Nesthy Petecio, Manila's newest female boxing sensation....

"Nesthy Petecio, the country’s newest female boxing discovery, is only 17. She wants to become an Asian Games and Olympic champion."

Doghouse Boxing.com has an interview up with Jennifer “The Razor” Barber...

"Jennifer “The Razor” Barber has burst on the female boxing scene with a vengeance. Having made her pro debut in March of 07, in less than a year and a half she has propelled her way to a NABF Championship and received the NABF Female Fighter of a the Year Award. And, in November of 08, with a record of 8 and 0, she got a shot at the WBC Female Super Featherweight Title."

Full article here

BTW, Jennifer had a match with Gloria Ramirez on October 29th at the Irvine Marriott in Irvine, California, that she won by decision.

Carina "La Reina" Moreno took on Anabel "La Avispa" Ortiz on Halloween night and lost via unanimous decision.
On the same card, Ana "The Warrior" Torres defeated Guyanese Stephanie George and retained her super flyweight World Boxing Council title.

Not enough for you?

Well Boxeo Mundial has an article up about Rooney’s Boxing Gym (formerly Gleason’s London) , and them taking on Marianne "Golden Girl" Marston as a trainer.
Marianne was trained by former Heavyweight Champion of the World Joe Frazier and by Cruiserweight Champion of the World, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham.
You can read that article here

Still not enough?

Okay, how about East Side Boxing having an interview with the beautiful and talented Mia St. John?

The Top Ten Female Boxers For August

It's been since January since I did a top ten list of the most popular female boxers.
No bear in mind, this isn't a list of the best female boxers, it's a list of who was the most searched for on this blog.
And since I did the last list at the beginning of the year, one thing has remained constant.....

Laila Ali - female boxing

1. Laila Ali
Yes, the daughter of "The Greatest" is still the most searched for female boxer on the site.
Dancing with the Stars, American Gladiators and The Early Show seem to be her latest claims to fame, not boxing, but that didn't stop her from outdistancing all the other ladies.
Laila's last fight was on February 3rd 2007 against Gwendolyn O'Neil which Laila won.

2. Lisa Brown
16-3-3 Lisa Brown came in number two.
Her last fight was a TKO win over Maribel Santana in March

3.Mia St John
In women's boxing, Mia St John is almost as inescapable as Gina Carano is in female MMA.
Mia (45-10-2) is always in the top ten.
Her last fight was a loss to Brooke Dierdorff on April 4, 2009.

4. Regina Halmich
Regina has an incredible (to me at least) record of 54-1-1.
Her last fight was a win over Hagar Shmoulefeld Finer back in 2007.

5. Christy Martin
I just got finished doing a couple of entries about Christy and her win over Dakota Stone.
Christy is 49-5-3 and looking for 50 before she retires.

6. Lucia Rijker
The "The Dutch Destroyer" seems to provoke both positive and negative emotions in female fight fans.
You either love her or hate her.
Lucia's last fight was a win over Deborah Fettkether back in 2004.
Her record is 17-0-0 and she wants one more fight....
The number one lady on this list, Laila Ali.

7. Ann Wolfe
The lady that held world titles in four different weight classes simultaneously has a record of 24-1-0.
Her last fight was a win over Lisa Ested back in 2006.

8. Erin Toughill
Currently a hot commodity in female MMA, Erin is one of the ladies being looked at to face Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos.
Erin has a boxing record of 7-3-1 and her last boxing match was a loss to Laura Ramsey in 2006.

9. Alicia Ashley
"Slick" has a boxing record of 14-9-1 and her last fight was a loss to Marcela Eliana Acuna on August 20th, 2009.

10. Natascha Ragosina
This Russian boxer has an impressive record of 21-0-0.
Her last fight was a win (duh) over Laura Ramsey on July 3rd, 2009 in Langenhagen, Niedersachsen, Germany.
